We see some new locations in Outlander Episode 404, ‘Common Ground’ as we watch the Frasers learning how to live with their native neighbours. First though, Jamie signs his life away to the governor. And again those scenes are from the interior of Newhailes House, a beautiful National Trust for Scotland property just 15 mins from the centre of Edinburgh.
Then it’s all systems go and we see the Frasers living in their temporary shelter while the “hard-core builders” hone their skills.
We got a bit of a look at the temporary shelter while it was under construction on a rural property near Doune (of Doune Castle/“Castle Leoch” fame).
Next stop was John Quincy Myers’ camp. Who knew he was living so close to the ridge and his camp was a regular forest-dwellers’ delicatessen? And Jamie learns to make jerky.
We were able to wander around this little camp one day when no filming was going on and we marvelled at the details… and felt as if we were really there in the back country of North Carolina. As usual kudos to the fantastic work of Jon Gary Steele and his art and set design team.

JQM’s camp was set up at Beecraigs Country Park and the next day when filming was underway, there was Rollo waiting for his cue.
After all the dramas with the bear-man, Tskili Yona, we get our first glimpse of a Native American village. The thatched building and the bark hut were set up at Faskally Forest near Pitlochry. What an idyllic place that was on the day we visited, warm and sunny, most un-Scottish but a delightful day-trip and escapade. And thanks to others for their photos too. Matthew Fairley got a close up look at the camp and local lass and proprietor of the Northlands B & B, Pauline Duncan, got some really good pictures of the Native American village, most of which will be part of future episodes I think.
Many outdoor scenes are shot at Cumbernauld Glen, which is very close to the Outlander Studio. And one fine day as we were watching the action there, Sam Heughan emerged looking a bit the worse for wear, but still smiling.
Looks like next time we will see a lot more Roger and Bree action. I’m looking forward to that and I have lots of behind-the-scenes pictures for you as well as a big reveal — some pictures we kept back from our original post to avoid spoilers. See you next week.
